Sabah Umno treasurer Datuk Seri Salleh Said Keruak wants the party to adopt a data-driven approach in resolving seat-sharing talks should it enter electoral cooperation with other political groups.
Salleh said that strategic seat allocation should prioritize winnability and coalition stability rather than individual party interests.
“The allocation of seats is not just about party entitlement but about ensuring victory,” he said in a Facebook post.
It could not be ascertained whether his views were directed at Sabah Umno, Barisan Nasional, or the party leadership.
But his remarks come amid growing speculation over political realignments ahead of the state election.
He suggested that decisions should be based on past electoral performance, party machinery strength, and voter sentiment.
Seats should also be reassessed if a party loses public confidence or if its candidate switches allegiance.
Salleh cautioned against multi-cornered fights within a coalition, warning that splitting votes could give the opposition an advantage.
He called for negotiation and compromise, suggesting internal surveys, seat swaps, and joint campaign strategies to resolve overlapping claims.
“In cases where two parties vie for the same seat, we must rely on data-driven decisions and find fair solutions, such as offering alternative seats or consolidating support behind a single candidate,” he said.
He also stressed the need for credible candidates with strong grassroots support and a proven track record of service.
Salleh proposed a structured dispute resolution mechanism to prevent conflicts over seat allocations from jeopardizing coalition unity. – March 16, 2025
