The number of flood evacuees in Sabah has risen to 5,617 from 4,990 in the past eight hours, as heavy rains continue to force more residents into relief centres.
The Civil Defence Force reported that as of 8 AM today, 39 temporary relief centres (PPS) have been opened to accommodate the evacuees, up from 35 recorded at midnight.
Kota Marudu remains the hardest hit, with evacuees increasing to 2,944 from 2,864. Pitas saw the sharpest rise, with numbers nearly doubling from 379 to 768. Meanwhile, figures in Lahad Datu (443) and Telupid (413) have remained unchanged.
Earlier, the number of evacuees in Sabah surged further to 4,990 from 3,929 in the last six hours, as floodwaters continue to rise in multiple districts, forcing more families into relief centres.
The Civil Defence Force noted the numbers are from 6pm on Thursday and 12am this morning.
Kota Marudu remains the worst-hit, with 2,864 evacuees, followed by Lahad Datu (443), Telupid (413), and Pitas (379), according to the State Disaster Management Committee. In total, 1,698 households are now housed in 35 temporary relief centres (PPS).
Authorities warn that the situation is worsening, with flood levels rising in several areas. Some PPS, particularly in Kota Marudu, have seen a sharp increase in evacuees overnight.
The Malaysian Civil Defence Force and local authorities have ramped up rescue efforts, ensuring displaced residents receive food, medical aid, and temporary shelter. However, road access to some flood-hit villages remains cut off.
With more rain expected, the Meteorological Department has advised residents in flood-prone areas to remain vigilant and prepare for possible evacuations. – January 30, 2025.
