Tragedy strikes Ranau police officer’s family – A police officer in Ranau returned home Saturday to discover his 11-year-old son missing and later found drowned in the nearby Nopungan River. Villagers located the boy’s body 500 metres from his home at 8.05pm. Ranau OCPD Supt Mursalin Mahmud said the river’s whirlpools might have contributed to the tragedy. The boy was pronounced dead at 9.10pm.


Beaufort tree-planting initiative supports Sabah’s green goals – Some 150 trees were planted in Beaufort under the I.P.L.A.N.T. programme, bringing the total to 326,845 trees planted. Officiated by KKTP Assistant Minister Datuk Isnin Aliasnih, the event highlighted Sabah’s goal to plant 1.3 million trees by 2033, in alignment with the SMJ Development Plan and global sustainability efforts.


Murder case in Penampang transferred to High Court – The case of Mohd Hazrul Migo Masan, accused of murdering an undocumented man in Penampang, was moved to the High Court. Charged under Section 302 of the Penal Code, Hazrul faces either the death penalty or 30 to 40 years’ imprisonment if convicted. His plea will be recorded at a later date.


MMEA detains cargo boat for licence violation– A cargo boat carrying palm oil fruits was detained by MMEA Tawau Zone for failing to update its captain’s name on the vessel’s licence. The boat, intercepted near Tinagat, was seized along with its cargo worth RM46,000. MMEA Director Maritime Captain Shahrizan Raman urged compliance with maritime regulations.


Hotel fee hike may affect Kota Kinabalu tourism – The Sabah Association of Tour and Travel Agents (Satta) has raised concerns over Kota Kinabalu’s reinstated hotel licence fees, effective January 2025. Chairman Dato’ Seri Winston Liaw warned the move could discourage visitors ahead of Visit Malaysia Year 2026, with fees ranging from RM40 to RM140 per occupied room monthly.


Support pledged for Sabah’s ethnic languages– Federal Minister Datuk Ewon Benedick reaffirmed government support for ethnic language education in Sabah during the closing of a workshop in Putatan. Efforts include teaching Kadazan, Lotud, Tatana, and Murut languages in schools. Ewon also launched a multilingual dictionary (English-Malay-Kadazandusun-Kadazan) published by Yayasan Bank Rakyat.
