Kitingan inspects flood-damaged bridge in Tuarid

Sabah Deputy Chief Minister I, Datuk Seri Dr Jeffrey Kitingan, visited Kampung Tuarid to assess damage to the Tuarid bridge, in Keningau, that was severely eroded by floods from Sungai Pamalan.
Kitingan, who is also the state agriculture and food industry minister, Keningau MP, and Tambunan assemblyman, conducted the site visit to evaluate the extent of the structural damage on Friday.
He was accompanied by Assistant Works Minister Datuk Robert Tawik, Keningau district officer Peter Jonu Moinjil, JKR Keningau engineer Nelliah Sitor, JPS Keningau district engineer Ir. Dachord Moujing, and other government officials. – February 7, 2025.
Bulgarian climber rescued after ankle injury on Mount Kinabalu

A 64-year-old Bulgarian woman was rescued after sustaining an ankle injury while descending from the peak of Mount Kinabalu on Friday.
The Ranau Fire and Rescue Station received a distress call at 7:58 a.m., and a team of seven Mountain Search and Rescue (MoSAR) personnel was dispatched to KM 7.2 of the mountain.
Led by operation commander Mourice B. Ubin, the team, assisted by Sabah Parks’ search and rescue unit (PARKSAR) and Health Ministry personnel, provided initial treatment before transporting the injured climber down to Timpohon Gate using a Robinson stretcher.
She was later transferred to an ambulance and taken to the hospital for further treatment.
The operation ended at 1:15 p.m.
Floods Displace Over 600 in Sabah
More than 600 residents from 76 villages have been evacuated as floods worsen across Sabah.
Beaufort remains the hardest-hit, with rising water levels forcing more families into shelters. Kinabatangan has seen a drop in evacuees, while Tambunan has activated its first relief centre.
The Padas River surged past its danger level, submerging roads and villages, leaving three schools flooded and several areas inaccessible.
Authorities are urging residents to stay alert as heavy rains continue.
Cable Thieves Caught, Losses Near RM90,000
Labuan police have arrested multiple syndicates linked to cable theft, with losses exceeding RM88,000 across 12 reported cases.
Five groups—Geng Bel Isham, Geng Salpau, Geng Fitri, Geng Eul, and Geng Arshad—have been dismantled, with suspects sentenced to jail terms of up to nine months and hefty fines.
Investigators found stolen cables stripped and sold to scrap dealers. Authorities are now working to recover damages and tighten security in high-risk areas.
Landslide in Sandakan Blocks Major Road
A landslide struck Jalan Cecily Tanah Merah in Sandakan early Thursday, blocking the road but causing no injuries.
Firefighters cleared the debris and deemed the area safe before calling off operations at 1:03 am.
Heavy rains continue to pose landslide risks in the area, authorities warn.
New Suspension Bridge a ‘Gift’ for Villagers
Residents of Kg Mangkadait and Kg Lungkidau in Ranau can now cross the Labuk River safely, thanks to a newly built 200-metre suspension bridge.
Assistant Minister Datuk Abidin Madingkir officiated the opening, calling it a “New Year’s gift” from the Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) government.
Villagers say the bridge will improve access to farmlands and daily commutes, but they also urge authorities to resolve overlapping land grant issues in the area.
Three Women Fined for Illegal Gambling
Three women were fined a total of RM4,800 by the Kota Kinabalu Magistrate’s Court for illegal gambling activities.
Two were caught with lottery tickets in Penampang, while another was caught gambling online in public in Inanam.
They faced fines ranging from RM1,200 to RM1,800, with the alternative of one-month jail time.
Seven Jailed for Drug Offences
Seven men were convicted for drug-related offences, with two caught possessing syabu and five testing positive for methamphetamine.
Sentences ranged from five to nine months in jail, with fines of up to RM1,800.

Pedestrian Killed in Hit-and-Run Near KK High School
A 46-year-old man was killed in a hit-and-run near KK High School on Wednesday night.
The victim, Nasri Karim from Tanjung Aru, was struck around 8:40 pm.
This is the second pedestrian fatality within a week after a 45-year-old jogger was hit by a car in Penampang on January 29.
Call for Action Over Pothole Tragedy
Kadazan Dusun Cultural Association (KDCA) Youth Chairman Steve Johnny Mositun is demanding accountability after a motorcyclist died due to a pothole near Lido Flyover in Kota Kinabalu.
“This is a failure of the authorities. How many more lives must be lost before action is taken?” he said, calling for an immediate probe.
Public trust is eroding, he warned, as similar cases continue without consequences.
