Sabah Umno has pressed the state government to fully disclose the details of its new Group Insurance Scheme, warning that a lack of clarity could undermine public trust and the long-term success of the initiative.
Its information chief Datuk Suhaimi Nasir said such steps will ensure the policy is more transparent, sustainable and truly beneficial for the people of Sabah in the long run.
“This initiative fundamentally reflects concern for public welfare, especially for the low income group.
“However, from a public policy and fiscal management standpoint, the implementation of this scheme must be evaluated strategically and thoroughly to ensure its objectives are achieved in a sustainable and comprehensive manner,” he said in a statement in Kota Kinabalu on Thursday.
The three-year plan, set to provide free accident insurance to all Sabahans starting May 1, has raised questions about how it will be managed, who will monitor its performance, and whether it can be sustained financially, he said.
“Any initiative that involves public funds should come with a clear explanation of its management mechanism, funding source and key performance indicators.
…Clarification is needed on the appointment process—whether it was through open tender or direct negotiation—to ensure accountability and integrity in the management of public funds,” he said.
He said it was crucial for the state to outline how the data of 3.5 million residents will be handled under the automatic enrolment system, and how potential overlaps or exclusion errors will be prevented.
The Libaran MP also questioned the financial burden of covering the premiums and whether it would strain allocations for critical sectors like health, education and rural infrastructure.
“The government needs to assure the public that the scheme will not come at the expense of other essential services, especially given the uncertain state of Sabah’s revenue,” he said.
Suhaimi urged the government to come forward with a detailed roadmap so that the policy is not only well-intentioned but also effective, sustainable, and genuinely beneficial to the people. – April 10, 2025
