Sabah’s state government must ensure alternative housing is in place before carrying out demolitions that displace local residents, says Warisan president Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal.
Shafie, speaking at a Chinese New Year celebration in Semporna on Sunday, voiced concerns over ongoing demolitions in various parts of the state, including Semporna, Sembulan, Tanjung Aru, and Likas.
“I am disappointed that under the GRS administration, homes are being torn down without proper relocation plans,” Shafie said.
“If they are illegal structures, fine—but don’t just demolish them without ensuring people have somewhere to go.”
Shafie pointed to the worsening financial struggles faced by many affected families, who he says cannot afford to build new homes on their own.
“With the current economic uncertainty, people simply don’t have the resources to rebuild.”
“The government needs to step in with solutions, whether through financial aid or government housing projects.”
Shafie also took aim at the timing of the demolitions, saying some were carried out while children were at school, leaving families with nowhere to return to.
“There’s no justification for demolishing homes in the middle of the day while children are in class, only for them to come back and find their house gone,” he said.
“These are Malaysian citizens, Sabahans. If they must be relocated, make sure they have proper housing first.” – February 1, 2025
