Mustapha to remain as Sabah PKR chief pending new state leadership lineup

Datuk Mustapha Sakmud to stay on as Sabah PKR chief until new leadership is appointed

Datuk Mustapha Sakmud will continue serving as Sabah Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) chairman until a new state leadership lineup is finalised, following the conclusion of the party’s internal elections.

The decision was confirmed during the first meeting of PKR’s 2025–2028 political bureau held in Petaling Jaya on Wednesday. The session, chaired by party president Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, also focused on gearing up for the upcoming Sabah state election.

In a statement, PKR said the move is to ensure continuity and readiness on the ground as the state heads toward the polls.

“In the interest of election preparations, former Sabah leadership council chairman Datuk Mustapha Sakmud will continue his duties as state chairman while awaiting the appointment of a new MPN (Majlis Pimpinan Negeri) leadership lineup,” the party said in a statement Thursday night.

Datuk Peto Galim will likewise retain his post as director of the Sabah State Election Committee (JPRN), responsible for coordinating the party’s electoral machinery in the state.

The political bureau also discussed policy directions under the new term, the impact of executive decisions on the cost of living, and PKR’s strategy within the federal Unity Government.

Meanwhile, Fuziah Salleh and William Leong will continue their roles as PKR’s secretary-general and treasurer-general until new appointments are made at the next Central Leadership Council meeting.

Sabah is expected to hold its state election in the near future, with PKR determined to consolidate its position within the Unity Government coalition. – May 29, 2025
