Warisan deputy president Darell Leiking has taken a sarcastic swipe to the Sabah mining corruption scandal, saying those implicated are now “safe and saved” from prosecution.
In a Facebook post, Leiking suggested that the powerful had shielded themselves from legal consequences despite videos allegedly showing assemblymen involved in corrupt dealings.
“Congratulations to those who are safe and saved from any court charges & hey, you can now really enjoy the spoils of the newly termed ‘donation/sumbangan’!” he wrote.
He expressed frustration over what he called the “new normal,” saying that justice for Sabah remains out of reach.
“This is the new normal sudah. Sickening and hopefully, they will face God’s justice someday, if ever—unless they believe that pun boleh di atur!”
Malaysia’s anti-graft agency has ruled that a video allegedly implicating a Sabah assemblyman in bribery is not credible and cannot be used as evidence.
Leiking said he had initially believed legal action would be taken but has now lost hope.
“Many told me, ‘No way they will ever be charged cause these guys know how to sort it out but I actually did not believe these guys can get off so easily and yet had some little hope that the law will eventually rope in and charge those who were actors in the videos.’”
He added that prosecuting those implicated could have served as a deterrent against corruption.
“At least, and if with the court charges against the alleged parties based on what so many millions of viewers have seen and heard of a possible abuse of Sabah’s assets in exchange for ‘you help me, I help you’ and allegedly money exchanges as mentioned in the videos, it would help to discourage and try to put to stop and fear to those currently abusing or contemplating of abusing Sabah’s assets and corrupt acts.”
However, he said he was wrong to believe anything would happen.
“But I was dead wrong and I guess ultimately nothing will ever happen to these big guys in power and the truth will be lost from ever being exposed.”
Reflecting on a conversation with a friend who had predicted no action would be taken, Leiking said he had been too optimistic.
“To one of my friends who told me (sometime when videos were released by MyKini), ‘Tiada ni ba bro and dorang tidak akan di dakwa biar pun banyak video dikeluarkan sebab dorang ni pandai atur ba.’ I admit that you won the bet and I owe you the Kon Lau Mee and the Ngiu Chap too.”
His remarks come after MACC chief Tan Sri Azam Baki said the videos in question were heavily edited and lacked credibility, raising doubts over their use as evidence. – February 17, 2025.
