KDCA Youth told to stay above politics amid IC claims

Cultural bodies should focus on empowerment not partisan narratives, said Warisan youth leader

The involvement of a cultural youth leader in a heated identity card (IC) debate has triggered criticism over the politicisation of cultural institutions.

Warisan youth chief Terence Au expressed concern over remarks made by Kadazan Dusun Cultural Association (KDCA) Youth leader Steve Johnny Mositun over the circulation of two letters said to contain minutes from a former Sabah Chief Minister on IC applications.

“More disappointing is that such politically charged remarks were made under the capacity of a leader of a youth cultural body.

“This raises questions about the misuse of cultural platforms for personal political agendas,” Au said in a statement on Tuesday.

He stressed that organisations such as the KDCA Youth Council should remain free from partisan political influence and instead focus on empowering youth and preserving Kadazandusun, Murut and Rungus (KDMR) heritage.

His statement came a day after the National Registration Department (JPN) issued a clarification on April 7, stating that applications for MyKAS, MyPR, or MyKad remain strictly subject to the law.

“No letter of support, not even from political leaders, can guarantee automatic approval,” the department stated, emphasising that each application undergoes rigorous checks and verification.

Au praised the department’s swift response, saying it reinforced the integrity of civil servants and refuted attempts to politicise the issue.

“It is an insult to the professionalism of technocrats to suggest they can be swayed by political letters.

“The facts are clear. Respect the process, and let us not tarnish its integrity over differing perceptions.”

He acknowledged the right of youth leaders to voice their concerns but urged them to choose appropriate avenues for political discourse.

“If he truly harbours political ambitions, this country offers many legitimate platforms to voice his views in a more constructive and responsible manner.”

Sabahans, Au said, were more interested in facts than perceptions, and preferred calm, factual dialogue over sensationalism.

“Not everything needs to be politicised. Some issues are better resolved with a calm mind and an open heart — for the future of this state we all love.” – April 8, 2025
