Death of motorcyclists: Shahelmy must explain poor road maintenance

The death of a motorcyclist who hit a pothole on the Lido flyover has sparked criticism from Warisan’s Kota Kinabalu division, with its information chief, Samuel Wong, questioning the state government’s handling of road maintenance.

Wong accused the Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS)-Pakatan Harapan (PH) administration of failing to ensure road safety, saying the incident reflects broader issues with Sabah’s infrastructure.

“Why should this happen? Do Sabahans deserve this?” he said in a statement. “Shouldn’t the government ensure that contractors maintain roads properly to keep them safe for users? Why does it always take a tragedy before action is taken?”

He noted that the pothole involved in the fatal accident had been there for some time, adding that many other roads in Kota Kinabalu face similar dangers.

“This is not an isolated case. What about other roads riddled with potholes in KK?

“Take the Jalan Lintas flyover to Jalan Tuaran bypass—potholes are everywhere, and streetlights are not working, making the roads dangerously dark at night,” he said.

Wong argued that Sabahans, as taxpayers, should not have to endure such conditions, calling on the government to ensure basic infrastructure meets safety standards.

“Why should Sabahans be subjected to this? People pay taxes, and the government must at least guarantee safe roads,” he said.

He also called on Sabah Deputy Chief Minister and Works Minister Datuk Shahelmy Yahya to explain the state of road maintenance in the city.

“What is the real issue here? Why does it take so long to fix these problems? The people deserve answers,” Wong said.

Urging Sabahans not to accept poor infrastructure as the norm, he said the public should demand better living standards.

“Our safety matters, our lives matter, and reliable infrastructure matters,” he said. – February 4, 2025
