BN youth leader rejects proposal to split religious affairs portfolio

BN leader rejects call to split religious affairs ministry, citing stability

A Barisan Nasional (BN) youth exco member has dismissed calls to split the Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Religious Affairs) into separate roles for Islamic and non-Islamic affairs.

Datuk Seri Dr Anil Sandhu rejected Raub MP Chow Yu Hui’s proposal, arguing that the existing structure efficiently oversees Islamic affairs while upholding religious freedom for non-Muslims.

“This suggestion is unnecessary and sensitive. Islam is the official religion under the Federal Constitution, and religious freedom has long been guaranteed,” he said via his Facebook.

Speaking in the Dewan Rakyat on Wednesday (Feb 12), Chow argued that splitting the portfolio would ensure fair religious governance, strengthen unity, and prevent any community from being sidelined.

Anil warned that such a move could lead to administrative complications and social instability, while suggesting greater interfaith dialogue as the way forward.

He called on all parties to respect religious sensitivities and avoid divisive issues, urging Malaysians to focus on unity and mutual respect. – February 13, 2025.
