The Sabah Water Department will focus on targeted enforcement against illegal water pumps in areas where misuse affects supply, said Deputy Chief Minister III Datuk Shahelmey Yahya.
He clarified that the March 3 notice was meant as an advisory, not an immediate widespread crackdown.
“There has been some misunderstanding. This is an awareness campaign to educate consumers on proper pump installation,” he said on Wednesday.
Many Sabah residents have criticised the notice, arguing that enforcement is unfair while water supply remains unreliable.
Shahelmey, who is also the state Works Minister, said enforcement would be limited to problem areas where improper pump use is severely disrupting water pressure.
However, he did not specify which pumps are illegal or how residents can check compliance.
He warned that pumps installed directly onto main supply meters can cause water shortages in some areas, particularly in high-rise buildings.
“We are prioritising water supply, but at the same time, we must address improper pump usage that worsens the situation for certain communities,” he said.
While acknowledging public frustration, he urged cooperation, saying illegal installations contribute to supply problems.
“Fixing the water issue is complex and takes time. If it were as simple as flipping a switch, we would have done it already,” he said.
Enforcement, he stressed, will only be carried out where pump misuse significantly affects supply, not as a blanket crackdown. – March 5, 2025
