Semporna MP Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal has urged authorities to act swiftly after a suspected World War II bomb was discovered on Sibuan Island, forcing its temporary closure.

“I appreciate the precaution taken by Sabah Parks to protect public safety, but we need swift action to ensure the island is safe for visitors,” he said.

Shafie warned that prolonged closures could harm Semporna’s tourism-dependent economy, with Sibuan being a hotspot for divers and travelers.

“As we prepare for Visit Malaysia Year 2026, we cannot afford to lose visitors. Tourism sustains many families here,” he stressed.

He called for a clear timeline on the bomb’s disposal to reassure tourists and businesses.

“We must protect Semporna’s reputation as a world-famous marine destination,” he added, urging transparency from relevant agencies.

Last night, the agency overseeing state parks, Sabah Parks, announced the closure of Sibuan Island following the discovery of what appears to be a bomb from the World War II era.

However, it noted that other islands within the Tun Sakaran Marine Park in Semporna remain open to visitors.
