The flood situation in Sabah is improving, with authorities lifting disaster alerts in four districts, but six others remain affected.
The Civil Defence Force (APM) said Kota Marudu, Telupid, Sandakan, and Kota Belud have been declared safe, allowing evacuees to return home.
However, more than 1,750 people remain in temporary shelters.
Kota Marudu district officer Meirin Binti Sugara said all relief centres in the district have closed following site assessments.
“I have directed the disaster operations commander to coordinate manpower, assets, and logistics for the relocation of affected residents,” she said.
Authorities are also now working on post-disaster recovery efforts wheverever needed.
As of 8am today, 5,202 evacuees from 73 villages remain displaced across nine districts, including Beaufort, Tongod, Lahad Datu, Beluran, Paitan, and Pitas.
A total of 33 evacuation centres remain operational. Kota Marudu recorded the highest number of evacuees at 2,944, followed by Pitas (792) and Lahad Datu (514).
The Civil Defence Force said floodwaters have yet to recede in six districts, and authorities continue to monitor the situation. – February 1, 2025
