Sabah stands to unlock significant economic opportunities once the federal government’s Climate Change Act is passed this year, the Sabah chapter of the National Consumer Foundation, said today.
Its chairman, David Chan, said Sabah is well-positioned to benefit from the transition to a green economy due to its rich biodiversity and abundant natural resources.
“Sabah’s natural assets can be leveraged to develop eco-friendly industries, renewable energy projects, and sustainable practices, all of which will help boost the state’s economy,” Chan said in Kota Kinabalu today.
The upcoming Climate Change Act, announced by Natural Resources, Environment, and Climate Change Minister Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad, aims to tackle climate issues while promoting sustainable economic growth.
Chan said the state government must align its policies with the federal green agenda to avoid missing out on these opportunities.
“The global market is increasingly focused on green energy and sustainability. Sabah must act fast to position itself as a leader in the green economy or risk falling behind,” he said.
He noted that Sabah could attract substantial investments in green industries and create more job opportunities by adopting federal green initiatives.
“Transitioning to a green economy is a strategic move to ensure long-term economic resilience, particularly in a rapidly changing global landscape,” Chan added.
The consumer foundation also called on the Sabah government to collaborate closely with Putrajaya to implement policies that support sustainable development.
“This is a chance for Sabah to not only contribute to global efforts in reducing carbon emissions but also secure its economic future,” said Chan. – January 11, 2025.
