Sabah allocates RM8.5 million to aid kidney failure patients’ treatment

State ramps up dialysis support amid rising cases

The Sabah government has allocated over RM8.5 million to subsidize hemodialysis treatment for end-stage renal failure (ESRF) patients, aiming to improve survival rates and quality of life.

Community Development and People’s Well-being Minister Datuk James Ratib said the first phase of the SMJ Health Assistance Scheme, “Sabah Sejahtera,” will benefit 1,385 patients at clinics and 797 undergoing home treatment (CAPD).

The scheme covers RM4.02 million for treatment costs and RM4.5 million for 100 new hemodialysis machines across 24 hospitals and a health clinic.

James noted private dialysis treatments cost over RM2,000 per month, adding that the additional machines will ease the burden on patients.

“It’s heartbreaking to see our people struggle to access dialysis at government hospitals and turn to private clinics,” he said.

The subsidy also covers clinic and CAPD fees, including a RM1 registration charge, RM13 for treatment, RM100 for dialysate services, and RM5 for specialist consultations.

Sabah Health Department (JKNS) director Dr Maria Suleiman said the state has 474 dialysis machines, but only 435 are functional, with 39 out of service.

The patient-to-machine ratio stands at 3.32, within capacity, but would rise to 5.35 if all ESRF patients required hemodialysis, surpassing the recommended limit of 4.0, she warned.

Sabah has seen a steady rise in ESRF cases since 2020, with 2,133 patients recorded last year. – March 7, 2025
