A pygmy elephant calf entered a plantation worker’s house in Bukit Batu, Kalabakan, causing a stir on social media last night.
Sabah Wildlife Department Director Mohd Soffian Abu Bakar confirmed the incident when contacted and said the Tawau district office has been instructed to take appropriate action.
“The incident occurred at the Sabah Softwood Plantation in Bukit Batu,” he said, adding that the department is monitoring the situation closely.
Mohd Soffian urged the public to remain vigilant and to promptly report any elephant sightings to prevent potential conflicts.
“This is a reminder of the importance of coexistence between humans and wildlife, especially in areas close to elephant habitats,” he added.
In January, Kalabakan residents were shocked by the discovery of a headless elephant carcass. Just a week later, a herd of adult elephants was spotted roaming near nearby plantation housing areas.
The Sabah Wildlife Department continues to investigate these incidents and is working on measures to mitigate human-wildlife conflicts. – February 21, 2025
