‘No let up to GRS-PH final assembly sitting’

Opposition leaders vow to confront GRS-PH government in final Sabah assembly sitting before state elections

Sabah’s opposition bloc is gearing up for a combative final sitting of the State Legislative Assembly, with leaders warning they will not allow the ruling Gabungan Rakyat Sabah–Pakatan Harapan (GRS–PH) coalition to enjoy an easy ride in what could be the last session before the next state election.

UMNO Sabah chief Datuk Seri Bung Moktar Radin made it clear that the opposition will focus on substance over spectacle.

“Because tomorrow will be the last state assembly sitting. We will be discussing facts — no rhetoric,” he said.

Warisan president Datuk Seri Shafie Apdal echoed that sentiment, delivering a blistering critique of the government’s priorities, particularly the recently announced group insurance scheme.

“What’s the point of introducing insurance when what the people of Sabah truly need is food, cheaper rice, lower prices for daily goods, and electricity?” he asked.

“Why say 3.5 million people are covered… Are we insuring the wealthy too? Don’t shift allocations elsewhere while leaving Sabahans struggling here.”

He also questioned federal government spending under Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

“When I came, Anwar spent RM3 million on canopies, food, and events. If that money had gone to healthcare or real support for the people, it would’ve made more sense. This year alone, the federal government allocated over RM30 billion. Why isn’t anyone questioning how that’s spent?”

Shafie went on to highlight persistent shortcomings in basic services and infrastructure across Sabah.

“Where’s the hospital in Kuala Penyu? It’s still just a clinic. How many beds does it have? What about the school in Long Pasia? The toilets in Kudat? Anwar says toilets were built, but there’s no water. How are students supposed to pee — with leaves?”

“We can’t solve problems piecemeal. You help schools but ignore internet connectivity. What’s the use of giving students laptops if they have to climb trees to get a signal?”

Their words came amid calls from State Assembly Speaker Datuk Seri Kadzim M. Yahya to avoid politicising the Head of State’s policy speech at the opening of the sitting, reminding lawmakers that debates must remain within the bounds of the address. – April 14, 2025
