Putrajaya: No policy, only guidance for Muslims at non-Muslim venues

The government decided that Jakim can only give guidance, not policy

The Malaysian government has clarified that Muslims will only receive guidance—not policy—on attending events in non-Muslims places of worship.

Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Religious Affairs) Datuk Setia Dr Mohd Na’im Mokhtar said the issue arose after Muslims raised concerns over invitations to such events that may involve religious elements.

The Malaysian Islamic Development Department (JAKIM) was tasked with preparing guidelines to assist Muslims in navigating these situations, he said.

According to him, the Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, has decided that JAKIM’s role will be advisory rather than regulatory.

“The government agrees that JAKIM can provide advice on the importance of safeguarding Islamic faith in such matters, but this is not a policy,” Mohd Na’im said in a statement on Friday.

He said all policies must consider national unity and receive Cabinet approval before implementation.

Meanwhile, National Unity Minister Datuk Aaron Ago Dagang said the government will continue promoting interfaith dialogue to strengthen religious harmony.

The issue will be further discussed in the upcoming Interfaith Harmony Committee (JK HARMONI) meeting, involving 24 representatives from various religious groups.

Malaysia has long been a model of religious and ethnic harmony, the government said, adding that stability depends on ensuring peaceful coexistence.

Muslims who are unsure about attending events in non-Muslim houses of worship are encouraged to seek guidance from religious authorities, including JAKIM.

The government reiterated that while safeguarding faith is important, maintaining unity and understanding among different religious communities remains a national priority. – February 7, 2025.
