MACC tightens net on 18 Sabah lawmakers in graft probe

Anti-corruption investigators push forward with case amid missing whistleblower evidence

The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) is moving quickly to wrap up its probe into 18 Sabah lawmakers allegedly tied to a corruption scandal, with findings set to be handed over to the Deputy Public Prosecutor soon.

MACC Chief Commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki said investigators are racing to secure more witness statements to solidify the case.

“We need additional witnesses to ensure strong evidence.

“When new allegations surfaced via a news portal, I immediately ordered my officers to extend the investigation and summon relevant individuals,” he told Astro Awani on Wednesday.

Azam confirmed that all necessary parties have been questioned, with statements being finalized for submission.

But the investigation is hitting roadblocks. The commissioner admitted that the probe has been hampered—not by outside interference, but by a lack of critical evidence.

“The whistleblower has yet to share the full video with us. The limited footage given to the portal doesn’t provide much to work with,” he said.

Despite mounting scrutiny, Azam warned against jumping to conclusions, insisting that without solid proof, it would be unfair to blame the Sabah government for any alleged misconduct.

“All statements have been recorded. We can’t automatically accuse the state government of wrongdoing or poor governance without concrete evidence,” he added. – Feb 13, 2025
