
More than 11,000 people have been affected by floods in Kota Marudu, with nearly 3,000 evacuated to relief centres.
Heavy rains triggered flooding across 28 villages, forcing residents to flee their homes.
District disaster committee chairman and Kota Marudu district officer Meirin Sugara said 10 evacuation centres had been activated.
“As of 8.00 pm, 11,307 people have been affected. A total of 2,864 evacuees from 1,066 households are now in shelters,” she said.
The worst-hit areas include Matunggong, Bandau, and Tandek.
Sungai Bongon hit 6.90 meters, surpassing the warning level. Sungai Bandau remains below the alert mark at 3.93 meters.
Sekolah Kebangsaan Ranau is housing 502 people, while Dewan Sekolah Kebangsaan Teritipan has 497 evacuees.
Landslides were reported at several locations, with Jalan Marak-Parak briefly blocked. The route reopened at 5.00 pm.
Residents have been warned to stay away from danger zones.
“We urge everyone to stay alert and follow safety instructions,” Meirin said.
