The much-awaited Labuan-Kota Kinabalu express ferry service faces delays due to safety risks at the Jesselton Point jetty in Kota Kinabalu, said LDA Holdings CEO Noor Halim Zaini.
The Labuan terminal is ready, but the Kota Kinabalu jetty’s condition makes disembarkation risky, Noor Halim, Bernama reported, Sunday.
The service, initially set for Dec 15, had strong backing from Federal Territories Minister Dr Zaliha Mustafa.
“The minister has been very supportive, knowing the ferry’s impact on Labuan’s economy and tourism,” Noor Halim said.
However, safety issues at Jesselton Point remain outside the minister’s control, he explained.
Discussions are underway with Sabah Park to use its jetty near Hyatt Hotel for the service.
Express ferries had previously used the Sabah Park jetty years ago.
Noor Halim assured that LDA Holdings is committed to reinstating the service as soon as possible.
Several groups, including Labuan India Chamber of Commerce chairman Datuk Dahir Singh have raised concerns over the ferry service after it failed to resume as usual on December 15, last year.
The resumption of the ferry service was announced by the Federal Minister Datuk Zaleha Mustafa. – Jan 12, 2025.
