The Keningau-Kimanis road, which has been closed since March 8 due to landslides, is expected to reopen within the next two to three days, pending weather conditions.
Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Ir Shahelmey Yahya said the timeline is based on the near-completion of cleanup work at two affected locations.
“Given the progress so far, I anticipate that the clearing and slope-cutting works will be completed within two to three days. However, this also depends on the weather.
“Light rain this afternoon has not stopped the work from continuing,” he said.
He was speaking after inspecting the landslide sites at KM11.2 and KM14.3 of the Keningau-Kimanis road on Tuesday.
Shahelmey, who is also the state Works Minister, added that besides the cleanup and slope stabilization, contractors will install road barriers to ensure safety once the road is reopened.
“At KM14, a temporary route has been constructed, but it is only suitable for light vehicles. I urge the public to wait for an official notice from JKR Sabah before using the road,” he said.
Contractors have been working daily from morning until late evening to expedite the reopening, he added.
The closure of the route has forced motorists to take alternative roads via Kota Kinabalu-Keningau through Tambunan or the Sipitang-Tenom-Keningau route. – March 18, 2025
