The first batch of MD2 pineapples under the Income Initiative Program – Agropreneur (IPR INTAN) has been exported from Sabah, marking a milestone in the state’s push for agricultural diversification.
The shipment was sent from Sepanggar Port to Rompin Integrated Pineapple Industries (ROMPINE) in Pahang.
“This is more than just an export. It opens new opportunities for small farmers,” said Deputy Chief Minister I, Datuk Seri Jeffrey Kitingan on Tuesday.
Jeffrey called the export “a milestone in Sabah’s agricultural journey.”
The first export consisted 15 tonnes of MD2 pineapples per container, valued at RM45,000 each.
The MD2 variety is known for its sweetness, golden color, and longer shelf life, making it popular in international markets.
The IPR INTAN program is a federal initiative under the Ministry of Economy, designed to empower small-scale farmers by increasing their monthly income to between RM2,000 and RM2,500.
The program received RM11.04 million initially, with an additional RM16.58 million in 2024 to expand plantation areas.
The project covers 500 acres of land, involving 450 participants under the guidance of the Sabah Rubber Industry Board (LIGS).
As of January 2025, 285 acres of MD2 pineapple plantations have been developed in Kota Marudu.
The Sabah government allocated RM4 million for a Pineapple Collection and Packaging Centre in Kota Marudu to support the supply chain.
“LIGS will continue to provide guidance and support to ensure the success of this initiative,” said LIGS chairman Senator Datuk Edward Linggu.
