An elderly woman was rushed to the hospital after being bitten by a snake while evacuating from a flood-hit village in Sabah.

The victim, believed to be in her 60s, was navigating floodwaters in Kampung Kauran, Keningau, when the snake struck, sinking its fangs into her left hand.

The attack happened as she attempted to reach a safer location amid rising waters, according to the civil defence department Thursday morning.

Emergency responders transported her to the hospital at 10:38 p.m. for treatment. Her condition remains undisclosed.

Authorities have urged residents to exercise caution when moving through floodwaters, warning of hidden dangers, including venomous snakes.

Meanwhile, the Civil Defence Force (APM) personnel evacuated 25 families stranded in the same village.

APM also retrieved essential belongings from a victim’s vehicle after they mistakenly drove into a drain.

APM officers, alongside Liawan assemblyman Datuk Annuar Ayub Aman, the district officer, and the police chief, conducted inspections in affected areas. – February 6, 2025
