The Energy Commission of Sabah (ECoS) has confirmed that the registration fee for standby electrical installations in the state remains unchanged.
Its Chief Executive Officer, Datuk Ir. Abdul Nasser Abdul Wahid, said the fee structure under the Sabah Electricity Supply Regulations 2024 ranges from RM30 for installations of 10 kilowatts (kW) or less, up to RM3,000 for installations exceeding 5,000kW.
He explained that the requirement is a continuation of the long-standing regulatory practice previously enforced by the national Energy Commission (ST) under the Electricity Supply Act 1990.
Standby power systems are commonly used by businesses, factories, and building owners in Sabah to ensure uninterrupted operations during power outages.
Sabah officially took over electricity regulatory powers early last year.
“The registration of standby generator sets and other electrical installations is necessary to ensure safety through proper documentation, professional testing, and, where required, on-site inspections,” Nasser said.
He also dismissed viral claims alleging that ECoS was imposing excessive charges on installation owners.
Nasser explained that the higher costs being circulated online likely refer to fees imposed by private consultants or contractors hired by owners to conduct technical assessments and prepare documentation.
“ECoS is a regulatory body, not a commercial entity. We do not collect or benefit from any of the fees charged by third-party service providers,” he stressed.
He added that such service charges are market-driven and subject to direct negotiation between installation owners and service providers.
To assist owners in making informed choices, ECoS provides a directory of certified contractors and consultants on its official website.
For installations already registered with ST and maintaining their original configuration, Nasser said owners only need to submit a simple declaration to ECoS without resubmitting supporting documents.
He also encouraged owners to manage the registration process themselves via the ECoS Online System to avoid unnecessary third-party costs.
“We are committed to keeping the process clear, accessible, and cost-effective for all installation owners across Sabah,” he added.
