Department of Environment (DoE) officers allegedly tried to release e-waste containers without proper authorisation, prompting calls for criminal investigations into misconduct and breach of trust, the Enforcement Agency Integrity Commission (EAIC) revealed.

The EAIC confirmed that several DoE officers were involved in irregularities, including bypassing procedures to clear the containers at Westports, Port Klang.

“There were attempts to release the containers without valid justification, and serious lapses in handling the case,” the EAIC said in a statement today.

The case could fall under Section 23 of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission Act 2009, which addresses abuse of power for gratification, and Section 409 of the Penal Code for criminal breach of trust by public servants.

Internal leaks concerning staff changes were also cited, raising concerns of breaches under the Official Secrets Act 1972.

The commission warned that delays and poor supervision in handling the case could result in financial losses and severe environmental damage.

“Swift disciplinary action and criminal probes are necessary to hold those responsible accountable,” it said.

The EAIC recommended that the Chief Secretary to the Government review the DoE’s standard operating procedures to prevent future breaches. – January 6, 2025
