Driving without licence tops Sabah RTD’s CNY offences

Over 26,000 vehicles inspected with 5,695 summonses issued

Driving without a valid competent driving licence (CDL) was the most common offence recorded during the Sabah Road Transport Department’s (RTD) special Chinese New Year operation.

Sabah RTD director Mohd Harris Ali said 1,220 motorists—22% of total offenders—were caught driving without a CDL during the Pandu Cermat, Sampai Selamat campaign from Jan 20 to Feb 6.

A total of 26,069 vehicles were inspected, resulting in 5,695 summonses for various offences involving 2,498 vehicles.

Among them, 1,000 cases (18%) involved expired road tax, 751 cases (13%) had no valid road tax issuance, 236 cases (4%) were commercial vehicles operating without vocational licences, and 111 cases (2%) had fancy number plates.

The department also seized two vehicles under Section 59(6) of the Road Transport Act 1987.

He noted a 41% drop in registered offences compared to last year, attributing it to intensified road safety awareness efforts.

Over 30 road safety programmes were held across Sabah, including exhibitions, awareness talks, and advocacy campaigns with strategic partners.

The public is encouraged to lodge complaints via the MyJPJ app or email aduantrafik@jpj.gov.my and aduantrafik.sabah@jpj.gov.my. – February 8, 2025
