The family of a delivery rider who died after hitting a pothole at the Lido flyover is seeking compensation from the Sabah Public Works Department (PWD).
Lawyer Abraham Ysrael from Michael Denis Tan and Co delivered the letter of demand to the department’s director at noon.
He confirmed the claim but declined to disclose the compensation amount, citing the family’s request for privacy.
The 38-year-old victim was the family’s sole breadwinner, leaving behind his widow, three young children, his elderly father, and grandmother.
According to the legal notice, the rider encountered an unrepaired pothole on February 3 while on duty, causing him to be thrown off his motorcycle.
He suffered severe injuries and was rushed to Queen Elizabeth Hospital I but died an hour later.
The family is demanding damages for bereavement, loss of financial support, funeral expenses, and other related costs.
Police said the crash happened at 11.15 am, with preliminary investigations confirming that the rider lost control after hitting the pothole.
The incident has reignited concerns over road maintenance in the city and the performance of government-appointed contractors. – February 17, 2025
