Anwar pushes for faster flood mitigation projects, warns against leakages

Floods victim cannot wait, said PMX

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has called for flood mitigation projects to be expedited, urging the Treasury to provide flexibility for immediate allocations in collaboration with the Ministry of Economy.

He said the lengthy tendering process has delayed critical projects, leaving flood-affected communities in limbo.

“It is best to use the tender system, but normal procedures take too long. The people cannot afford to wait,” he said at the Prime Minister’s Department monthly assembly in Putrajaya on Monday.

Anwar noted that while open tenders are crucial for transparency, the government must find ways to carry out the process without compromising accountability.

He warned that negotiated procurements have led to excesses and leakages, citing past instances of mismanagement.

“Where possible, we must allow flexibility so these projects can be expedited through immediate allocations,” he said.

The Prime Minister reaffirmed the government’s commitment to flood mitigation, saying the projects would remain a priority alongside roads, highways, and utilities.

Despite the significant financial implications, he said the government must not delay efforts to protect vulnerable communities.

Anwar also stressed the need for continuous improvements in governance, enforcement, and public service efficiency.

“We must continue to improve our practices and care for the people,” he said. – February 10, 2025.
