A 35-year-old man was arrested in connection with the theft of tombstones from a Muslim cemetery in Tawau.

The suspect was detained at a house near the cemetery in Kg Sungai Imam Bombalai Laut on Friday, March 14, following an investigation prompted by a viral video showing the missing tombstones.

Tawau police chief Assistant Commissioner Jasmin Hussin said the suspect was arrested around 2 p.m., and officers recovered the stolen tombstones from his residence.

“We have brought the suspect back to the police station for investigations and to determine his motive,” Jasmin said, adding that authorities would not tolerate actions that cause public distress.

The case is being investigated under charges of mischief causing loss or damage. – March 16, 2025
