Not every question is an attack

Leaders must respond with facts, not emotions

Datu Rosman Datu Ahir Zaman

I take note of the lengthy statement by a pro-GRS individual who attempted to justify the Chief Minister’s leadership and defend all government actions without leaving room for criticism or questioning.

While the statement appears comprehensive, it fails to distinguish between political attacks and legitimate checks and balances within a democratic system.

Questions Are Not Attacks. Raising issues such as GLC appointments, exploration project approvals, and administrative transparency is not an act of hatred, let alone a personal attack on any leader.

These are part of the necessary checks and balances that any responsible party, including UMNO Sabah, must carry out.

Transparency Is Not Rhetoric. The people of Sabah have the right to know why a company whose capabilities are being questioned was granted a license over such a vast area, even if it was later reduced.

Technical procedures and application history are not definitive answers — the core question is whether the decision was made free of political interference and whether the people know who stands to benefit.

Language Is a side Issue. UMNO Sabah has never made language a core criticism. What we raised was the effectiveness of policy communication to investors and the public.

Shifting the focus to the “English language” issue to divert from the real concerns is an outdated tactic that serves no one.

(Writer is responding to the recent viral social media controversy involving the chief minister’s proficiency in the English language).

GLCs Are Not Personal Property. The appointment of the GGM of SEDCO raised questions not because of ethnicity, but because of principle — was it done competitively and transparently? Was the selection process open to other candidates? In any transparent administration, such questions must be answered, not distorted with racial arguments or sentiments.

Political Experience Is Not a Free Pass From Scrutiny. We respect the political experience of any leader, including the Chief Minister. However, that does not exempt one from criticism. If he truly believes in his record and integrity, then respond to the questions raised with facts — not by attacking the person asking.

UMNO Sabah Has Principles. We will not allow the voices of the people and grassroots members to be silenced in the name of “boomerangs” or any other analogy. If a decision raises questions, it must be explained — not met with sarcasm or narratives claiming the opposition is “overreacting” or “immature.”

GRS Strength Need Not Be Proven by Attacking Others. If GRS is truly confident in the people’s support, then continue working effectively and focus on resolving real issues. Do not distract by playing up personalities or portraying all criticism as attempts to bring the government down.

We Oppose, Not Out of Hatred. UMNO Sabah will not stay silent in the face of issues related to integrity, fairness, and accountability. We will continue to raise questions for the good of the people of Sabah — not for personal or political gain.

UMNO Sabah does not oppose development or stability, but we reject any administration that cannot be questioned, lacks transparency, and belittles the voice of the people. If the current government truly upholds the principles of Sabah Maju Jaya, then the first step is to answer every question with professionalism, not emotionalism.

Every question deserves an answer for a more transparent, progressive and dignified Sabah.
