Sabah Forest Industries: A Legacy of Neglect, A Community in Crisis

SFI was supposed to be a pillar of Sabah’s economy, leveraging the state’s rich timber resources to drive industrial growth

Once a giant in Malaysia’s pulp and paper industry, Sabah Forest Industries (SFI) now stands as a cautionary tale of economic mismanagement and government inertia. The collapse of the once-thriving operation has left hundreds of former workers in limbo, battling legal disputes, power cuts, and a future clouded with uncertainty.

From Industry Leader to Financial Ruin

SFI was supposed to be a pillar of Sabah’s economy, leveraging the state’s rich timber resources to drive industrial growth. Instead, years of financial mismanagement saw it spiral into insolvency. By November 2021, the High Court ordered the company to wind up after it failed to clear debts totaling RM2.7 million owed to contractors.

Government Takeover and Legal Wrangling

The Sabah government moved to acquire SFI’s massive land holdings, citing public interest, but the company’s receivers fought back. A legal battle ensued, with SFI challenging the compulsory takeover of 15 parcels of land. In November 2023, the High Court granted the company leave to contest the acquisition, with SFI arguing the move was tainted by bad faith and not truly for public benefit.

Workers Left in the Dark—Literally

The real casualties of SFI’s downfall are its former employees. Some 600 ex-workers and their families still occupy company housing in Sipitang, but their living conditions have deteriorated drastically. Since May 2023, they’ve been without water and electricity, relying on rainwater and generators to survive. Despite state government assurances that they wouldn’t be evicted, their day-to-day struggle has only worsened.

Voices of Frustration

Community leaders are demanding action. Jeffrey Gopog, chairman of the SFI Family Community (KKS), slammed the government’s inaction, warning that conditions in the estate are becoming unbearable. Former worker Jeffridin Baudi echoed the sentiment, calling for urgent restoration of basic utilities and transparency on what lies ahead for the displaced families.

An Uncertain Future

While court battles rage on, the fate of SFI’s assets—and the people left behind—remains in limbo. The stalled legal proceedings have frozen any redevelopment plans, keeping the Sipitang community trapped in uncertainty. With no end in sight to their suffering, the residents of SFI’s housing estate are left questioning whether help will ever come.

SFI’s collapse isn’t just a corporate failure—it’s a human crisis. And for the hundreds still waiting for relief, time is running out. – March 18, 2025
