A 55-year-old Chinese national had her left leg amputated after a ceiling collapse at a restaurant in the Segama Complex.
The victim, Wang Wei, was dining at her son’s Chinese halal restaurant on March 7 when the first-floor ceiling gave way, trapping her under debris.
Her husband, Yu Ping An, 58, sustained minor injuries.
Wang also suffered spinal injuries and requires further surgery.
The couple was visiting from China to assist their son with his restaurant, which has operated in the rented premises for two years.
Witnesses reported a loud crash as the ceiling collapsed, leaving a gaping hole in the four-story building.
Fire and Rescue Department personnel arrived within minutes, evacuating 55 residents from the building’s upper floors as a safety measure.
The Segama Complex, constructed in the mid-1970s, has shown signs of structural deterioration over its 49-year history, including previous incidents of falling debris.
Authorities are investigating the cause of the collapse, and residents have been advised not to return until the building’s safety is assured.
The victim’s family expressed gratitude for the public’s concern and is in discussions with the premises’ owner regarding the incident. – March 11, 2025
