DBKK launches full audit after Segama restaurant collapse

Building owners ordered to check buildings

A Chinese halal restaurant’s floor gave way in Segama last Friday, and now, Kota Kinabalu City Hall (DBKK) isn’t taking any chances.

Every building under its watch—especially those over 40 years old—is getting checked, and the mayor wants owners to do the same, fast.

“We are auditing all buildings under DBKK’s jurisdiction that are over 40 years old—shops, office buildings, flats, and condominiums, particularly those occupied by the public, whether rented or managed by property companies,” said Kota Kinabalu Mayor Datuk Seri Dr Sabin Samitah on Monday.

And for those managed by property firms?

“We have sent reminder letters instructing them to conduct integrity checks on their buildings,” he added.

There’s no official deadline—yet. But after Friday last week’s collapse, Sabin said DBKK is reconsidering its timelines.

The mayor spoke after meeting Sabah Governor Tun Musa Aman at Istana Seri Kinabalu, where he also invited him to DBKK’s breaking fast event this Wednesday.

Also present were DBKK Deputy Director-General (Management Services) Faradillah Abdul Rani and Deputy Director-General (Rural Development) Karaim Rahim. – March 11, 2025
