Sabah is investing RM100 million to construct a Cultural Complex in Kinarut, Papar, as part of its strategy to enhance tourism offerings and preserve cultural heritage.

Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor said the project is a significant move to capitalise on Sabah’s rich natural and cultural resources, positioning the state as a top destination for cultural tourism.

“This investment will enable us to develop innovative attractions while improving existing ones,” Hajiji said at the groundbreaking ceremony in Papar on Saturday.

Hajiji emphasised the importance of the complex in preparation for Visit Malaysia Year 2026, highlighting Sabah’s readiness to welcome a surge in tourist arrivals.

Calling the initiative a landmark effort in preserving and showcasing the state’s heritage, he urged community leaders, NGOs, and stakeholders to back the project.

“With this undertaking, we’re reaffirming Sabah’s position as a premier destination celebrated for its heritage and vibrant culture,” he said.

Sabah Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Datuk Christina Liew said the complex will include a Cultural Village and Cultural Centre to showcase the ethnic diversity of Sabah’s 35 ethnic groups and over 200 sub-ethnic communities.

“This project will not only expand our tourism offerings but also create jobs and opportunities for local communities to benefit from the sector,” Liew said, adding that the cost of the complex would be in tune of over RM100 million.

The two-story structure will accommodate up to 3,000 people, featuring multi-purpose spaces for events, gatherings, and ceremonies. Additionally, it will include restaurants, outdoor landscaped areas, a lake, and parking facilities for 1,000 vehicles.

“Construction will be carried out in phases, ensuring some facilities are accessible even before the entire project is completed,” Liew added. – January 25, 2025
