Sarawak’s ambition to achieve developed and high-income status by 2030 is viewed as a challenge by some, according to Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr. Sim Kui Hian.
Speaking at an event hosted by the Federation of Chinese Associations Kuching, Samarahan, and Serian Divisions, Dr. Sim described the state’s development journey as reaching “adulthood.”
“Sarawak no longer wants to be seen as ‘children’ (budak-budak). This is our chance to mature, but it also poses a challenge to others who may not want Sarawak to grow stronger,” he said in Kuching, on Saturday.
He suggested that Sarawak’s success might put others in an unfavourable light, particularly within Malaysia.
Dr. Sim encouraged Sarawakians to uphold their cultural values and traditions while adopting the spirit of Agi Idup, Agi Ngelaban (While I live, I’ll fight) to resist attempts to hinder the state’s progress.
“Unity and harmony are vital for Sarawak to realise its goals. While others may try to slow us down, we must stay focused and determined,” he said.
Federation president Dato Richard Wee also attended the event. – January 18, 2025.
