The students behind last year’s Gempur Rasuah Sabah rally have been summoned by police to give statements at the Kota Kinabalu police station.
Secretariat spokesperson Muhamad Fadhil Kasim confirmed they were told to show up at 6pm today.
Fadhil, a Universiti Malaysia Sabah student and president of social activist group Suara Mahasiswa, announced the matter in a press chat.
“We will be at the police station at 6pm,” he said.
The Gempur Rasuah Sabah rally nearly descended into chaos when demonstrators faced off with the Gerakan Bangkit Sabahan group at Menara Kinabalu on New Year’s Eve.
Both rallies went ahead despite police warnings to cancel due to safety concerns over the nearby Karnival Ria event.
Riot police had to form blockades to prevent clashes between the two groups.
Both rallies called for anti-corruption reforms, greater autonomy for Sabah, and a fairer share of resources from Putrajaya. – January 4, 2025
