The Sabah government must disclose the findings of a feasibility study on relocating Kota Kinabalu International Airport (KKIA) to Kimanis, amid plans to expand the existing airport, says Parti Warisan vice-president Junz Wong.
Junz, on Tuesday said the proposed relocation remained under consideration and how it fitted into the federal government’s plans to upgrade KKIA.
He said Qhazanah Sabah Berhad had announced in 2023 that the feasibility study was completed, while its chairman said the following year that the report had been presented but was awaiting a State Cabinet decision.
However, the federal government had said it had no proposal to build a new airport and would instead focus on optimising KKIA.
In July, the deputy transport minister said funding had been approved for an expansion costing nearly RM500 million, although land and site matters remained unresolved.
“More than four years after the MoU was signed, Sabahans deserve to know what the study found, what decision followed and whether the Kimanis proposal remains active,” he said in a statement from Kota Kinabalu.
Junz, who is also Tanjung Aru assemblyman, urged the government to release the full study or at least its executive summary, while also seeking clarification whether an MoU signed between Qhazanah and Berjaya Land remain valid.
“Sabah needs reliable and affordable air connectivity, and long-term airport planning matters. But decisions of this scale must be supported by evidence, transparent costs and a clear account of public benefit,” he said.
Junz said the government should publish the study, explain how state and federal plans aligned, disclose potential public financial commitments and provide a clear timetable before deciding KKIA’s future.
