Tawau UMNO chief Datuk Ghazalie Ansing has won a civil lawsuit against his ex-wife and another defendant over defamatory allegations made two years ago.
The Kota Kinabalu Sessions Court ruled in Ghazalie’s favour on December 20, awarding him damages for libel, including aggravated and exemplary damages. The total amount is pending court assessment.
Ghazalie, 42, filed the defamation suit on June 1, 2023, against his former wife, Joanna @ Karmila Kamin @ Jemirah, 45, as the first defendant, and Farihanna Abdul Rahman, 37, as the second defendant.
The case stemmed from a video in which both defendants allegedly accused Ghazalie of domestic violence against his ex-wife and of raping her assistant.
The video, uploaded on YouTube and a news portal on May 7 and 8, 2023, reportedly damaged his reputation, credibility, and image as a political leader.
Following the video’s circulation, Ghazalie, through his lawyers from Tetuan Nurul Rafeeqa Advocates, issued a legal demand letter to both defendants on May 17, 2023, before filing the lawsuit two weeks later.

During the judgment proceedings via Zoom on December 20, Judge Marlina Ibrahim ordered both defendants to issue a public apology in The Star, New Straits Times, and Daily Express.
Additionally, the first defendant was instructed to publish an apology on her Facebook account and the blog sabahbigmouth.wordpress.com, with all advertisement costs to be borne by her.
The court also granted an injunction preventing the first defendant or her associates from publishing, sharing, or contributing to the dissemination of the defamatory video. This injunction extends to any defamatory statements, quotes, or images about Ghazalie across all media platforms.
Both defendants were further ordered to pay five percent annual interest on the judgment sum from the date of the ruling until full settlement. – February 4, 2025
