RM3.2 million in one-off aid for Sabah’s roadside traders

643 small traders across Sabah to receive RM5,000 each under state-backed initiative to ease business burden

The Sabah government has approved a one-off financial aid totalling RM3.215 million to support 643 roadside traders across the state, in what it described as a show of commitment to the informal economy.

Deputy Chief Minister II Datuk Seri Dr Joachim Gunsalam said each eligible trader will receive RM5,000, following a state-wide verification exercise led by the Ministry of Local Government and Housing, the State Finance Ministry, and all local authorities.

“The selection process was thorough, involving on-the-ground data collection in every district,” said Dr Joachim, who also oversees the Local Government and Housing portfolio.

He was speaking at the state-level launch of the UNTUKMU (Usaha Naik Taraf Untuk Komuniti dan Masyarakat Umum) aid distribution programme at Pentas Budaya Kundasang.

The Kundasang event saw the first group of 47 traders from the Ranau district receive their RM5,000 aid in cash.

Disbursement to other districts will follow in phases, with mock cheques presented to local councils during the launch.

Dr Joachim said the assistance aims to address key challenges faced by small traders, including rising operating costs, insufficient capital, and lack of stable trading locations.

“This is not just about giving money. It is about recognising the vital role these micro traders play in our local economy.

“We hope this support will help them upgrade their tools, expand their operations, or simply survive a tough economic climate.”

Also present at the event were senior ministry officials, local government leaders, community representatives, and enforcement personnel.

The one-off aid was announced in the Sabah State Budget 2025 with a total allocation of RM15 million aimed at helping business owners, hawkers and petty traders to recover and grow.  – May 8, 2025
