Five staff of a local tour operator fined for mishandling sea turtle in Sabah

Minister urged tourism players to be more responsible

Five staff members of a local tour operator in Sabah have been fined after a viral video showed them mishandling a sea turtle at Manukan Island.

The 30-second clip, shared by the Tropical Research and Conservation Centre (TRACC), depicted divers restraining a struggling sea turtle while posing for photos.

Sabah Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Datuk Christina Liew condemned the actions.

“Their actions are irresponsible and contradict Sabah’s marine conservation principles.

“We urge all tourism operators to play a more responsible role in ensuring compliance with guidelines and regulations.”

Authorities issued compound notices to both the individuals and the tour operator under the Parks Enactment 1984 (Amendment 2024) for violating marine conservation rules.

The incident has sparked calls from the diving community for stricter enforcement against those who harass marine life.

Sabah Dive Squad Club president Sim Fui described the divers’ actions as irresponsible and unethical.

Authorities have urged the public to respect marine life and report any misconduct to help protect Sabah’s underwater ecosystem. – March 16, 2025
