Fourteen people were detained during a major security crackdown in Sandakan targeting illegal migrants, drugs and utility theft, authorities said.

Thirteen undocumented migrants were rounded up and handed to immigration officers, while another man was detained after testing positive for methamphetamine.

The joint operation, involving police, military, maritime and enforcement agencies, swept through Sandakan town, squatter settlements, suburbs and nearby villages.

Authorities said the operation focused on illegal immigration, drug offences, smuggling of controlled goods and other crimes, including activity along known land and sea smuggling routes.

Power supply officials cut illegal electricity connections during the raids, uncovering losses estimated at RM310,000. Water authorities also moved against illegal pipe connections, with losses put at more than RM27,000.

Traffic police issued 137 summonses for various offences, while enforcement officers seized controlled and subsidised goods worth more than RM5,000 and issued on-the-spot fines.

Council officers also confiscated unlicensed hawker equipment and smuggled cigarettes during checks around market areas.

Authorities said similar operations would continue across eastern Sabah to curb cross-border crime and maintain public order.
