The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) seized 1,750 litres of petrol worth an estimated RM18,000 after foiling an alleged smuggling attempt near Kampung Sinakut Tengah here.
Two unregistered pump boats were intercepted during Ops Sejahtera and Ops Tiris 4.0 at about 6am and 6.20am on Sunday.
Lahad Datu Maritime Zone director Dzulfikhar Ali said the boats, painted blue and green, were carrying a combined 70 containers, each with a capacity of 25 litres.
However, several individuals believed to be operating the boats fled, abandoning the vessels and their cargo upon noticing the enforcement team.
Four boat pump engines believed to have been used in the operation were also seized.
The boats and their cargo were taken to the Felda Sahabat Maritime Base for further investigation.
The case is being investigated under the Supply Control Act 1961 for suspected attempted petrol smuggling to a neighbouring country.
MMEA said it would intensify enforcement and surveillance operations to curb smuggling activities and safeguard national waters.
