KK Mayor: Media is DBKK’s ‘right arm’ — and crucial in solving city issues

DBKK acknowledges the role of the media and social media

Kota Kinabalu Mayor Dato’ Sri Dr Sabin Samitah has credited the media for helping City Hall address public concerns over the years — calling it DBKK’s “right arm” in serving the people.

“More significantly, the media has become a very important right arm of DBKK for 25 years,” he said during DBKK’s breaking fast event with journalists here today.

He said media platforms — from newspapers to TikTok — have consistently played a key role in highlighting community needs and enabling the council to respond effectively.

“The media also plays a role in voicing the people’s needs and challenges, especially at the grassroots level,” Sabin said.

“This close cooperation enables local authorities to act more proactively and effectively in addressing issues affecting city residents.”

Sabin added that feedback, suggestions, and even criticism from the press are vital to DBKK’s service improvement.

“The feedback, suggestions, and criticism conveyed by the media are an important reference for DBKK to improve the services provided.”

He said the role of the media has grown beyond information delivery to include shaping public discourse and fostering constructive dialogue between citizens and authorities.

“It is important to recognise that the media is not limited to a single form. Whether through print, electronic or social media, all play an important role in ensuring information reaches the public quickly and effectively.”

“Social media has now become a highly relevant medium in spreading the latest news, emergency information, and various community-related activities.”

DBKK also honoured veteran journalists and handed out Raya treats in appreciation of their contribution to city-building. – March 27, 2025
